It culminates with a look at how Mott Children’s Hospital is using music therapy to bring health and hope to its young patients.

Julie Jaffee Nagel, Ph.D. is a psychologist, psychoanalyst, and musician, who brings a unique combination of experience and education in both music and mental health to diverse psychological problems and a special understanding of performance anxiety.

 

Dr. Nagel graduated from The Juilliard School (BM and MS, Piano) , the University of Michigan (MSW, MA, Ph.D., Psychology and Social Work), and The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute (certified in Adult Psychoanalysis). She has helped numerous people understand and overcome blocks to creativity, performance anxiety, career issues, and self-esteem.

Dr. Nagel’s fantasy dialogue “A Conversation Between Mozart and Freud” was performed in Steinway Hall, NYC, February 2020 (just before Covid lockdown). She has given presentations and conducted classes and seminars on Stage Fright, Careers in the Arts, #Me Too and Music Education, and the Value of Music in Mental Life for many years and recently, “Injustice, Oppression, and Prejudice as Heard in Music.”

Dr. Nagel is author of Managing Stage Fright: A Guide for Musicians and Music Teachers (Oxford University Press, 2017) and Melodies of the Mind (Routledge, 2013) and has written numerous articles for all the major peer reviewed Psychoanalytic Journals and Music publications. She was a Contributing Editor of a regular column for 4 years titled “Mind Matters” in Clavier Companion as well as articles in The American Music Teacher (MTNA) and TAP (The American Psychoanalyst).

She has been active for many years in the American Psychoanalytic Association (Chair: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Music program for 14 years, College Music Society, Music Teachers National Conference, and National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.  At the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy she received the Distinguished Service Award. Additional awards include Nathan Segal Award (twice - Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute, MPI), Karl Menninger Award, and The Ernst and Gertrude Ticho Award (American Psychoanalytic Association, APsaA).

 She holds memberships in the American Psychoanalytic Association, American Psychological Association, Michigan Psychoanalytic Society, International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) where she serves on the Committee on Culture. She is a Clinical Supervisor for Psychiatric Residents in China for the China American Psychoanalytic Alliance (CAPA), and on the Editorial Boards: The American Psychoanalyst (TAP), and Medical Problems of Performing Artists.

Meredith Irvine, MHA, MT-BC, NICU MT, is a board-certified music therapist and Sophie’s Place Studio Manager at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. She serves as the music therapy supervisor at Mott in addition to her clinical work and is an established local and regional presenter. Ms. Irvine is a published author in Voices, an online music therapy journal. She remains passionate about growing advocacy and awareness for the field of music therapy within Mott, as well as regionally and nationally.
