Review Summary
The purpose of this review is to summarize recent advances in our understanding of the impact of dyslipidemia (high fat levels in the blood) on microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes, with an emphasis on peripheral neuropathy and nephropathy. Emerging data support a role for dyslipidemia in microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes, so defining its precise molecular impact and mechanisms may pinpoint potential lipid-centric treatment options. Interventional studies based on dietary changes, exercise, or weight-loss surgery may also positively impact these highly prevalent and morbid complications.
