Diabetes Care – The Prevalence and Determinants of Cognitive Deficits and Traditional Diabetic Complications in the Severely Obese

The Prevalence and Determinants of Cognitive Deficits and Traditional Diabetic Complications in the Severely Obese

Objective

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cognitive deficits and traditional diabetic complications in a cohort of severely obese individuals relative to lean controls. The association between metabolic factors and these outcomes were also evaluated.

Conclusion

Data from this study indicated that obesity alone is likely sufficient to cause cognitive deficits, but not complications affecting the eye or kidney. Moreover, central obesity was the key metabolic risk factor associated with cognitive deficits.
