Dietary weight loss in people with severe obesity stabilizes neuropathy and improves symptomatology

Key Points:

Individuals with obesity can develop progressive nerve damage called peripheral neuropathy, which can cause pain and difficulty walking, lower quality of life, and, in the worst scenarios, lower limb amputation. Peripheral neuropathy currently lacks effective therapy. This paper evaluated the impact of weight loss over 2 years on the progression of peripheral neuropathy in 131 participants. Weight loss improved the metabolic profile of participants, halted the progression of peripheral neuropathy, and improved the quality of life. Thus, weight loss is a promising intervention to slow the development of peripheral neuropathy and advocates launching clinical trials.
