The NEAR was established in 2017and is intended to recognize the top review-type article published in print in NPP during the previous year. It is decided by a vote of the senior editors. In the history of the NEAR (4 bestowed), the first-author awardees have been 50% women and 50% were ACNP members at the time of the award.
