I am interested in the role that androgens play in central regulation of metabolism and reproduction. Androgen receptors are highly expressed in the hypothalamus, particularly in regions known to regulate food intake and reproduction. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have elevated levels of androgens and are often infertile. PCOS is also associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, androgen receptor expression in the hypothalamus may play a role in the development of reproductive and metabolic phenotypes seen in PCOS. The goal of my research will be to elucidate the role of androgen sensitive neuronal populations in the hypothalamus that modulate energy balance and reproduction.
