Congratulations to Juanita Merchant!

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Juanita Merchant for her induction as a member of the highly prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). In case you did not catch the announcement in the University Record last week (http://record.umich.edu/articles/two-u-m-join-american-academy-arts-and-sciences), she is only one of two faculty at the UM who were selected (the other being Dr. Frank Yates, Professor of Psychology and Business). The AAAS was established in 1780 and is among the most renowned societies in the US, whose members include luminaries in the academic, business, arts and policy arenas.

Juanita (professor of Internal Medicine and Professor of MIP) adds this honor to her recent selection by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) as recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Achievement Award in Basic Science. Her laboratory has been involved in several areas of study including understanding how chronic inflammation leads to preneoplastic gastric metaplasia, transcriptional regulation of the hormone gastrin, and is more recently focusing on the molecular underpinnings of enteroendocrine tumorigenesis.

Juanita will be receiving her AGA honor at the upcoming Digestive Disease Week international meeting held in early May and her AAAS honor at a ceremony held in October.

Congratulations Juanita for these two terrific and well-deserved honors!
