We are pleased to share that the Board of Regents today (Sept. 23) approved the appointment of Daniel E. Michele, Ph.D., as interim chair of the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology in the Medical School, effective Sept. 1, 2021. He will assume leadership of the department while a national search commences.
Dr. Michele obtained his undergraduate degree from Calvin College. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in 2000 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Iowa from 2000-04. He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2004 as an assistant professor. He rose through the ranks to associate professor in 2011 and to professor in 2017. He also holds an appointment as professor of internal medicine. His research laboratory is focused on the mechanisms of muscular dystrophy associated with mutations in the transmembrane dystrophin-glycoprotein complex. In addition to his scholarly research, he has been extensively involved in departmental and university-wide committees, including education, advocacy and outreach, and administrative service. He previously served as director of the Molecular & Integrative Physiology Graduate Program and is founding director of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program. He also is director of the Cardiovascular Research and Entrepreneurship T32 training program and director of the Physiology Phenotyping Core, which is supported by Molecular & Integrative Physiology, the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, and the National Institutes of Health-funded Michigan Musculoskeletal Health Center.
