The University of Michigan sports neurology fellowship is designed to provide expertise in the diagnosis and management of neurologic sports injuries. The goal of the fellowship is to provide an environment for acquiring the knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment essential to the practice of Sports Neurology. The Michigan sports neurology fellowship patient population spans pediatric to geriatric, with the emphasis on young athletes engaged in competitive performance.
A key aspect of sports neurology is acute evaluation during athletic competition. The University of Michigan sports neurology fellowship provides ample on field and training room concussion management of elite athletes. Michigan NeuroSport provides neurologic care for ~1,600 athletes at the University of Michigan Athletics, Eastern Michigan Athletics and USA Hockey.
The fellow is an integral component of the Michigan NeuroSport multidisciplinary clinic. The clinic has been designed to provide all aspect of clinical care for sports neurology with an emphasis on sport related concussion. The multidisciplinary team combines the expertise of specialists from neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatric sports medicine, neuropsychology, spine and vestibular therapy, athletic training and mental health care professionals.
The fellowship can also include additional training in neurophysiology, headache, pain management, neuropsychology, vestibular therapy or sports medicine tailored to career goals.
In addition to clinic care the fellow is excepted to be involved in research and education, with the goal being publishing and presentation at a national meeting. Education opportunities include lectures within Michigan Medicine, in the community and at D1 athletic facilities.
Our Mission
The mission of Michigan NeuroSport is to provide optimal individualized patient centered care for all aspects of sports neurology with an emphasis on acute concussion care and its potential long-term complications for athletes of all levels from recreational youth to elite professionals.
Requirements
The fellowship is administered through the University of Michigan Department of Neurology and is intended for those having completed an adult or pediatric neurology residency.
