“From Singing to Speaking: Recovering from Aphasia”

Gottfried Schlaug, MD, PhD

Professor of Neurology and Biomedical Engineering University of Massachusetts Medical School - Baystate and Institute of Applied Life Sciences, UMass Amherst

Gottfried Schlaug, MD trained for his MD and PhD in Neuroscience at University of Cologne, and completed Neurology residency at Heinrich-Heine University. He did further training as a research and Vascular Neurology fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he established his Music and Neuroimaging Laboratory, studying topics as varied as the neurologic correlates of music in the brain, effects of music on brain development, and strategies to guide motor or aphasia recovery after ischemic stroke, including non-invasive brain stimulation or the use of intonation and non-intonation based music therapies for patients with aphasia. He is now located at the University of Massachusetts where he is the scientific director of the Human Magnetic Resonance Center (HMRC) and where he continues to study the neural correlates of music and the role of brain plasticity in recovery from stroke or developmental brain injuries.
