"Vulnerability to Persistent Brain Dysfunction after Sepsis"

Dr. Benjamin H. Singer

Assistant Professor

Benjamin H. Singer, MD, PhD is a University of Michigan “lifer”.  After receiving an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, he joined the Medical Scientist Training Program and completed a PhD in Neuroscience in the lab of Michal Zochowski and did postdoctoral research with Jack Parent.  As a medical student, he was captivated by the clinical problems of delirium and persistent brain dysfunction after non-neurologic illness.  As a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellow in the lab of Ted Standiford, he began studying the neuroimmune response to systemic infection in murine models and has continued doing so as his lab transitions to independence.  His work has been supported by the UM ADRC/Department of Neurology, UM Depression Center, MICHR, the American Thoracic Society and Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research.  He received a K08 career development award from NINDS and is soon to begin his first R01 through NIA.
