The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan has a rich history. Begun in 1918 as a section within the Department of Surgery under the direction of Dr. Max Peet, our Department now consists of 24 clinical faculty who provide world-renowned patient care and eight research faculty who conduct innovative, ground-breaking research at the Crosby Neurosurgical Laboratories, the Castro & Lowenstein Translational Neuro-Oncology Laboratories, and in our clinical areas.

Clinical Excellence
The department’s clinical faculty is notable for its depth and breadth, as well as its devotion to providing each and every patient with superior neurosurgical care. On a daily basis, our surgeons are delivering world-class care in the treatment of the most complex neurosurgical disorders. The U-M Department of Neurosurgery is not only at the forefront of neurosurgical care delivery; the Department’s research and clinical faculty members are also working hard to discover and develop groundbreaking treatments to move the field of neurosurgery forward. All of our clinical faculty maintain research interests within their fields and partner with a large group of dedicated research faculty, positioning the department among the leaders in the nation for research funding. Our research programs focus on both basic sciences as well as clinical medicine, creating a translational environment that takes state-of-the-art advances directly to the patients who need them.
