Residency

Welcome to the University of Michigan Neurosurgery Residency website. We are honored to welcome you to this first phase in your exploration of our residency program. The current faculty, residents, and staff are all very proud of the long tradition of excellence that our program has maintained. We continually work to ensure that our program offers the best possible environment for developing the careers of future leaders of neurosurgical practice and science. At the conclusion of the program, we want our residents to be prepared not only for a robust clinical practice, but also for a successful career as a future leader in academic neurosurgery.

The department’s clinical faculty is notable for its depth and breadth. There are busy clinical programs in Spine Surgery, Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery, Functional Neurosurgery, Epilepsy Surgery, Neurosurgical Oncology, and Pediatric Neurosurgery. All of the clinical faculty maintain research interests within their fields and are supported by a large group of dedicated research faculty, positioning the department among the leaders in the nation for federal and extramural research funding.

The department is committed to the academic development of all residents. We continue to emphasize a two-year period of academic development during the fourth and fifth years of training that is largely free from call or any clinical responsibilities. Many residents have chosen to pursue research in any of the basic science laboratories within the department or around campus. Others have pursued Master’s degrees while working on clinical research. The environment at Michigan can support research at the highest level. U-M has an annual research budget of 1.4 billion dollars, placing it first among public institutions according to the National Science Foundation.

Michigan Neurosurgery has long been proud of the supportive community that is found within the department.

Finally, Ann Arbor is a great place to live and work. The city is consistently ranked near the top of the U.S. News & World Reports' list for resident livability.

Good luck to you as you progress through the residency application and interview process. Please let us know if we can ever be of assistance.

Best wishes,

Dr. Oren Sagher
