Education & Research Funds

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan is committed to academic excellence. The faculty are dedicated to helping every student, resident and fellow become practitioners or academicians of the highest quality, with a breadth of knowledge that spans all aspects of the primary specialty as well as the scientific basis of the subspecialties. In order to achieve these goals, obtaining funding for resident and fellow educational and research activities is a department priority.

Funds have been established through the generosity of private donors to provide financial support to students, residents and fellows for research and educational activities including medical school scholarships, start-up funds for new research, funding for educational experiences in emerging countries and opportunities to present at national meetings. These funds are available through a board review process.

Ansbacher Fund for Resident/Fellow Education and Research

The Ansbacher Fund for Resident/Fellow Education and Research was established in 2001 in recognition of Dr. Rudi Ansbacher’s contributions to resident and fellow education, and to provide a future source of funding for resident and fellow education and research. Dr. Ansbacher served as a research fellow under the direction of S. Jan Behrman within the Center for Research in Reproductive Biology from 1969 to 1971 and then permanently joined the faculty in 1980. He officially retired from the University in 2001 and continues to support the department through his clinical and mentoring work. This fund is a tangible way for those who have benefitted from Dr. Ansbacher’s mentoring and guidance to express their appreciation, and a way for others to support the department's educational activities.

Mel L. Barclay Medical Student Scholarship

Mel Barclay, M.D., joined the faculty in 1973 and served as director of theObstetrics and Gynecology Medical Student Clerkship from 1984 until he retired from the University in 2003. In recognition of Dr. Barclay’s innumerable contributions to medical education, the department established the Dr. Mel Barclay Medical Student Scholarship to provide scholarships for deserving University of Michigan medical students selected by the Dean of the Medical School.

Milton Goldrath Resident Research Support Award

The Doctor Milton Goldrath Resident Research Fund was established as a result of a generous gift from the family in memory of Dr. Goldrath with the intent to encourage a life long commitment to scholarship and clinically relevant investigation. Dr. Goldrath earned his bachelors and medical degrees from the University of Michigan and practiced medicine in Metro Detroit for 53 years. Dr. Goldrath was chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Sinai Hospital in Detroit for 12 years, from 1974-86, and was an associate professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Goldrath was a pioneer in the use of lasers, inventor of medical instruments, a gifted gynecologic surgeon and beloved clinical teacher and role model, which is why we are extraordinarily pleased to recognize a much admired colleague, researcher and alumnus with this annual award.
