Mark D. Pearlman, M.D. named Interim Chair of OBGYN

Mark D. Pearlman, M.D., the S. Jan Behrman Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will assume the role of interim chair for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective July 1. Pearlman will serve in this role while the organization conducts a national search for the next permanent chair of the department.

Since 1990, Pearlman has been a valued and exceptional member of Michigan Medicine’s faculty. In 2001, Mark was appointed as the S. Jan Behrman Professor of Reproductive Medicine and promoted to professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Surgery in 2002.

He is known internationally for his expertise in breast cancer, gynecologic infectious disease, quality assurance and trauma in pregnancy. In addition to authoring 81 peer-reviewed publications, Pearlman serves on numerous national societies, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He also serves as the medical director of pharmacy and associate chief of clinical affairs at Michigan Medicine.

Pearlman received his M.D. from Michigan State University in 1984 and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at William Beaumont Hospital in 1989. He also completed a fellowship in infectious diseases in obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine before joining U-M.

The organization is also extending its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Timothy R.B. Johnson, M.D., the Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children, for his 24 years of dedicated service as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Over the years, Johnson transformed how women’s care is delivered and taught at Michigan Medicine, locally, nationally and internationally. His contributions, commitment and mentoring have been pivotal in the advancement of women’s health here and around the globe.
