Leaders in Research

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan has a broad-based research program, conducting both basic laboratory work and an extensive array of subspecialty focused clinical research programs. Under the direction of Vanessa K. Dalton, M.D., M.P.H., Associate Chair for Research, our department has grown to include diverse, world-class research programs in basic science and clinical studies, with a focus on dynamic, multidisciplinary interactions.

Mission Statement:

The overarching mission for research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is to generate knowledge that advances the understanding and treatment of diseases that affect women’s health and reproduction.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a major contributor in the effort to better understand the basic mechanisms involved in health and disease. Our department currently ranks 11th in NIH funding (FFY 2010) among medical school obstetrics and gynecology departments across the nation, and is an integral part of the University of Michigan’s Medical School research enterprise, which is ranked in the top ten of NIH sponsored research.

To achieve our mission, we foster a supportive environment for innovative research that provides evidence-based solutions.  We encourage collaborative and interdisciplinary research within the university and in laboratories throughout the world.  We aim to use the most advanced methodologies and to engage multiple disciplines to tackle highly significant disease related problems. We are committed to the process of translational research: applying ideas, insights and discoveries generated through basic scientific inquiry to the treatment or prevention of human disease; and the process of taking insights and ideas from clinical experience to generate new testable hypotheses. Our research is purposefully directed toward areas that will foster the rapid transformation of scientific discoveries into drugs, treatments and methods of prevention.

Research volunteers help our researchers discover valuable information from clinical studies that supports improving health care for all patients.   If you are interested in participating in a clinical research study at the University of Michigan, visit UMhealthresearch.org
