Lecture Description

While the negative health effects of the climate crisis are well-documented, the role the health care system plays in driving climate change is less known among medical professionals. US healthcare alone accounts for more carbon emissions annually than the entire country of the United Kingdom. There are enormous opportunities for decarbonizing US healthcare, but culture has contributed to the "throw-away" practice of medicine, creating an over-reliance on single-use items and the supply chain. This session presents evidence-based opportunities for decreasing our carbon footprint in the operating room, including actionable changes for reducing single-use items, waste, anesthetic gases, and energy use.
