During National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, Michigan Medicine is celebrating its volunteers with a special virtual video. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Mr. Rogers,” who has long been a symbol and generosity and kindness. Both of those qualities are emblematic of the health system’s volunteer corps, now more than 2,900 strong.
Recently, Metro Health reached out to the organization with a request to help them improve their transfer process with community hospitals — enabling them to provide better care for stroke and emergency patients, as well as the inpatient population. Often, patients are stressed and confused by the complex network of halls, elevators and floors within the main academic medical center. That’s where the ambassadors step in — many of whom speak multiple languages (among the volunteers are individuals who speak 13 different languages).
