Ana Montoliu, MD, a 3rd year resident in ophthalmology at the Hospital General Universitario of Castellón, Universidad de Castellón (Spain), completed a two-month observership in neuro-ophthalmology and oculoplastics at Kellogg Eye Center in June 2016.

Born in Castellon, Spain, she completed her high school education in Burriana, Spain, not far from Valencia.  Her mother, aunt, and grandfather are all physicians.  A high score on the national examination opened a position for her at the medical school at the Universidad de Valencia.  During her 5th year of medical school, she took advantage of a special program that allows medical students in Europe to spend a year at a collaborating school in another European country.  She chose the University of Pisa, where she became fluent in Italian.  A brief exposure to ophthalmology in Valencia attracted her to the “elegance of this specialty and the combination of medicine and surgery.”  She gained entrance to the program at the same university, where she will complete her studies in 2017.

She learned about Kellogg from her friend Veronica Castro, MD, who had earlier completed an observership at Kellogg.  Coming from a relatively small training program, Dr. Montoliu has enjoyed the immense variety of cases she has observed here.  She was especially impressed with the “good organization” of clinical activities at Kellogg and the nifty oculoplastic surgical maneuvers she observed.
