There is a great deal of interest in the role of nutritional supplements in an individual’s health. With the recent legalization of marijuana usage in the state of Michigan and its medical usage in other states, there is renewed interest in treating glaucoma with this substance. The effects of marijuana on the eye will be discussed. Shingles rates are increasing amongst adults in the United States, particularly immunocompetent adults. Although vaccinations are typically emphasized in the pediatric population, increasing emphasis should be placed on shingles vaccination in the adult population greater than 50 years of age. Herpes zoster ophthalmicus is a common presentation of shingles. Review the studies looking at use of vitamins or herbal supplements for management of several common eye conditions including diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, ARMD, cataract, and dry eyes. This will include some updates on the benefits or lack thereof of antioxidant vitamins for ARMD including the most recent AREDS 2 results, the Centrum vitamin supplement cataract study as well as the cataract arm of the AREDS studies, marijuana for glaucoma, and the DREAM study for dry eyes.
