New Horizons in Ophthalmology: Pearls for Practice and Emerging Innovations

The 92nd Annual Spring Postgraduate Conference will be a multi-specialty perspective on the opportunities and challenges of practicing ophthalmology in 2021. There will be an in-depth look at new technologies available such as the latest multi-focal intraocular lenses, new minimally invasive glaucoma surgery devices, and modern optical coherence tomography techniques. Experts in the field will show a glimpse of the future in treating ophthalmic disease on the individual level with gene therapy and stem cell therapy, and on the societal level with Big Data applications in ophthalmology. We will also explore how the practice of ophthalmology has evolved to include telehealth eye care and we will examine how to provide mindful and empathetic care to patients of all backgrounds. Participants will provide telehealth eye care through video visits and phone visits

Target Audience

This activity is appropriate for: House Officers, Medical Students, Nurses, Other Healthcare Professionals, Physician Assistants, Physicians, Technicians

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, participant should be able to:

  1. Select multi-focal IOLs tailored to individual patients
  2. Interpret common ophthalmic conditions on modern OCT scans, selection of MIGS devices tailored to individual patients, treatment of myopia in children to slow progression, or evaluation and management of optic disc edema
  3. Provide culturally-sensitive care to patients of different ethnic and gender identities
  4. Provide telehealth eye care through video visits and phone visits for appropriate patients
