ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ranked No. 1 in Michigan and No. 8 in the country, University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center was recognized among the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report for 2017-2018.
The annual U.S. News and World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings distinguish hospitals that excel in providing high-quality patient care and treating the most challenging health conditions.

Bruce Fralick Professor, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and member of the Michigan Medicine board. “We’re extremely proud to be recognized for the strength of our efforts year after year.”
Since it was initially formed in 1872 as one of the first university-based ophthalmology departments in the United States, what is now known as the Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan has been a pioneer in some of the most important developments in eye care.
Pioneering moments include development of the femtosecond laser, the cofounding of an early eye bank, advancement of the role of genetics in eye disease, and the first commercial implantations of the Argus II retinal prosthesis for patients afflicted with end-stage retinitis pigmentosa.
To better serve patients needing advanced eye care, the Kellogg clinical staff has grown and services expanded to include a comprehensive Thyroid Eye Disease Center, an Ocular Oncology Clinic and a growing roster of experts in diabetes-related eye disease.
Once in a one-room eye clinic, today Kellogg has one of the largest research spaces devoted to ophthalmology in the world.
Kellogg Eye Center is part of Michigan Medicine, the U-M’s academic medical center. This is the 25th consecutive year the hospitals and health centers of Michigan Medicine have been recognized by USNWR for strong across-the-board performance.
The University of Michigan Hospital ranks No. 6 in the country and is among the nation’s best in 15 medical and surgical specialties.
