Pediatric Cardiology

The goal of the division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Michigan is to provide the best possible care for infants, children, and adults with all forms of congenital and acquired heart disease. We achieve this goal through the expertise of our internationally known faculty combined with the facilities and resources of the University of Michigan Health System. We strive to deliver highly competent, skilled, and knowledgeable health care services guided by respect for our patients and families.

Clinical Care

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology provides for the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of infants, children, adolescents and adults with congenital and acquired heart diseases at the University of Michigan Congenital Heart Center - a world-renowned, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facility within C.S. Mott Children's Hospital that is affiliated with the U-M Cardiovascular Center.  Care is provided by a team of highly specialized cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac intensive care physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists, radiologists and allied health professionals (social workers, pharmacists, dieticians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, etc.).  In addition to providing care at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, U-M cardiovascular medicine specialists provide services at several non-U-M facilities throughout Michigan.

Research

The Division directs basic and clinical research programs related to hypoplastic left heart syndrome and other functional single ventricle lesions, cardiac transplantation, myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, pulmonary and systemic hypertension, congestive heart failure, obesity, and genetic regulation of cardiac development.  Faculty research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U-M Cardiovascular Center, industry grants, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and through private donations.

Education

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology is a nationally recognized and ACGME-accredited training center for physicians who care for children with cardiovascular disease.   In addition to teaching nurses, medical students and residents, the Division directs a Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology that provides outstanding educational opportunities for development of academic pediatric cardiologists who will be future leaders in the field.  In preparation for a career in pediatric cardiovascular medicine and biology, our expert faculty teach and mentor fellows in clinical care, teaching and research within Michigan Medicine.
