The most senior fellow is responsible for the fellows’ on service / on call schedule, with support provided by the program director.
Fellows typically choose to do on service (weekday responsibilities) and on call (overnight and weekend responsibilities) weeks concurrently, but this is not required.
First year fellows will be on service for 3-4 weeks each month, and on call for 2 weeks each month.
Senior fellows will be on service for a total of 4-8 weeks per year, and on call for 1 week each month.
Each fellow will have 1-2 clinics staffed by the same attending(s) each week to ensure longitudinal exposure to 1-2 clinical mentors.
Each fellow will have 1 clinic staffed by the on-service attending each week to ensure exposure to all of the Pediatric Rheumatology Core Faculty over time.
First year fellows will see both new and return visit patients during their longitudinal clinics, and new patients only during their clinics staffed by the on- service attending.
Senior fellows will see both new and return visit patients during every clinic.
Arthrocentesis with Intra-Articular Injection of Steroids (joint taps)
Throughout training, fellows will perform joint taps on their own continuity patients, with direct supervision by the attending staffing on that particular date. These may occur in clinic without sedation, or in the procedure room with sedation.
First year fellows will be expected to participate in all joint taps that occur in the procedure room with sedation, as is possible within the limitations of other clinical and research/scholarly activity responsibilities.
Senior fellows who desire additional experience may participate in joint taps for patients with a different primary pediatric rheumatologist as desired and possible within the limitations of other clinical and research/scholarly activity responsibilities.
Supplemental Outpatient Clinics
First year fellows will attend the Interdisciplinary Systemic Inflammation Clinic (ISIC) and the Juvenile Myositis Clinic, both for 1 half day each month.
Senior fellows will attend the Interdisciplinary Systemic Inflammation Clinic (ISIC) and the Juvenile Myositis Clinic as is possible to maintain continuity of care within the limitations of other clinical and research/scholarly activity responsibilities.
Senior fellows will attend several sessions in 2-4 additional clinics of their choice to supplement their Pediatric Rheumatology clinics.
