Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan

Founded in 1891, UM Pharmacology was the first department of its kind in North America.  In over 125 years, our program has awarded the largest number of Ph.D.s in the discipline. Our graduates are making a major impact on the field of pharmacology, and they currently include many pharmaceutical company executives, research directors and senior scientists, directors of government research laboratories and leaders in academia.

As one of the most exciting areas of biomedical research, Pharmacology allows you to have a real impact on human health while working in the lab. Pharmacology is multidisciplinary, bringing together ideas from chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology and integrative biology to create a comprehensive framework for understanding and treating disease. Here, at the University of Michigan Department of Pharmacology, we have assembled a diverse group of outstanding scientists who work together to advance the forefronts of new knowledge to develop novel therapeutic approaches for treatment of disease. There are a number of exciting opportunities for students to work with leaders in the field in one of the top Pharmacology departments in the world.

Our mission is to train the next generation of pharmacologists for careers in academia, government, biotech, the pharmaceutical industry, as well as emerging novel careers in which their knowledge provides value. To do this we provide a rigorous and supportive learning environment and individual mentorship from our faculty comprised of the very best academic pharmacologists.
