Pharmacology Student Spotlight

Neikelyn Burgos-Tirado

3rd year Ph.D. Student, Auchus lab;
Hometown: Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Undergraduate: Chemistry BS, University of Puerto Río Piedras Campus

“Two summers ago, I decided to hike the Grand Canyon’s Rim to Rim (24 mi) in one day. This was an extraordinary experience that reminds me of grad school. Each step of the way the canyon surprised me with its beauty and all it had to offer but as mileage increased it became harder for me to keep a steady pace.  Subsequently, when it got really tough, I only thought about my next step not about the many miles ahead. It was a hike full of laughs, awe moments, tears and pain.  Eventually, that evening I accomplished my goal; one step at a time.  During these uncertain times I encourage us as a community to take it one step at a time and look forward to being together once again.”

In the lab of Dr. Richard Auchus, Neikelyn studies an enzyme/protein that is essential for the processing of male hormones, it also plays a role in prostate cancer.  As an undergraduate, Neikelyn studied Chemistry but loved biological systems.  In selecting the Auchus lab she was able to combine both those interests in studying biochemical interfaces.

Why is your research important?

“I think it’s important because even though we are looking at the biochemical and physical properties of the interaction between P450 17A1 and Cytochrome b5 looking closely at this system could answer “holy grail’ questions in the field that down the line could be beneficial for drug design there for better outcomes for the patients. “

Self-described as very shy, Neikelyn considers her biggest challenged to be reaching out.  She has been working on overcoming this everyday of graduate school.  This has been significantly more difficult given the current isolation but she likes to be challenged and have the opportunity to grow as a professional and person.   Graduate school has provided many opportunities for problem solving and setting goals.  The daily will to keep conquering each deadline keeps Neikelyn successfully moving forward.

What are you most proud of?

“For being a first-generation graduate student and very proud to be able to set an example for a younger generation in the same position (as I was).”

Neikelyn is still considering her future plans but she is interested in scientific consulting and pharmaceutical development.  She also wants to make sure that she is able to continue outreach and helping students who are unrepresented in graduate school and science.

Tell us fun or interesting fact about yourself?

“I like to push my physical limits.”  Two years ago, she hiked the Grand Canyon in one day and last year she completed a triathlon.   I can’t wait to see what the next challenge is, Neikelyn!
