Advice on how to prepare for Michigan winters: Make sure to invest in a long, down coat. You will learn to value function over fashion in winter. Keep an ice scraper, a shovel, road salt, and a blanket in your car. I also recommend a heated mattress pad.

Best advice received from a preceptor: One of my preceptors taught me to never trust what someone else wrote in a patient's chart notes. Make your own assessment based on the data and interpretation of the patient's labs. Even an attending who has been practicing for 20 years can overlook something. Don't be afraid to make therapeutic recommendations as long as you have good science to back you up!
