Why did you choose Michigan's residency program? In looking for residency programs, I sought out those at academic medical centers with large residency classes. It was important to me to build a strong network of peers as a new practitioner. Furthermore, Michigan offers a wide range of rotations and PGY-2 programs. As someone who was interested in various areas of practice, this was appealing to me. Finally, the emphasis placed on research by the program and institution played a significant role in my decision. Turns out I liked it so much I stayed for a second year!

Advice for future residents: Residency/applying for residency can already be a weird and stressful time. This year, we have COVID to thank for making it even weirder! As cheesy as it sounds, try to reframe it as a learning experience in dealing with the unknown and uncomfortable. As always, be kind to yourself and others.

Advice on how to prepare for Michigan winters: Buy a coat that could be mistaken for a sleeping bag, wool socks, and a thermos to keep your coffee (or other beverage of choice) hot.
