The University of Michigan Prescription Drug Plan (UM PDP), in collaboration with the Department of Pharmacy Services at the University of Michigan Health (UMH), is recruiting applicants for a PGY1Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Program, accredited by ASHP in partnership with AMCP.
General Description
The PGY1 Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Program offers a unique experience working in the pharmacy benefits world from an employer's perspective. The program abides by the standards set forth by the ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate Residency Programs. The pharmacy benefit team interacts with world renowned experts in the fields of medicine, pharmacy and managed care to achieve the best mix of state of the art care and cost-effectiveness. In many instances, we work with subject matter experts within our organization who are pivotal in the drug research, development and approval process. By collaborating with clinicians and academics, our residents obtain unique insight and perspective that only a few managed care residencies can offer.
Program Purpose
The U-M PDP’s PGY1 managed care residency program prepares the resident to be proficient in several areas of managed care pharmacy, including formulary management, pharmacy benefit design, clinical program development, drug use management and drug information.
The PDP residency program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Residents completing this program will be qualified and confident to practice as managed care pharmacists in a variety of managed care practice settings including, but not limited to, health plans, pharmacy benefit management organizations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and consultant firms.
