General Description 

The PGY2 Informatics Residency is designed to provide concentrated training in clinical informatics, health information technology, analytics and automation. The resident will build a strong foundation in core skills needed for the to succeed as an informatics pharmacist while developing skills needed for further growth throughout his/her career.

Areas of focus include medication safety, data warehousing, project management, EHR optimization and maintenance, clinical decision support, system integration, innovation in technology, analytics and research.

Program Purpose

The informatics specialty residency at Michigan Medicine is an ASHP-accredited PGY2, one-year program designed to provide concentrated training in clinical informatics, pharmacy analytics, health information technology and automation. Based on the resident's background and available projects, he or she will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of healthcare informatics domains including technology essentials, medication safety, data warehousing and cleansing, data visualization, project management, vendor relations, clinical information systems (EHR/CPOE), clinical decision support, integration of systems, innovation in technology, clinical monitoring and scoring systems, surveillance/predictive analytics and research.

This residency program is designed to prepare residents to become successful Pharmacy Informatics practitioners and leaders by providing a wide array of experiences with leaders in pharmacy administration, renowned clinicians, and world class experts in research, education, and population health. Upon completion of the program, residents will have demonstrated the ability to measure, improve, and evaluate the outcomes of pharmacy information systems and technology. The residents will be prepared to accept informatics positions in settings throughout the health system enterprise. 

To prepare residents to assess health system technology and related interventions using data, this program has requirements regarding pharmacy analytics. As part of the residency, residents must demonstrate the ability to work with data visualization technologies and SQL.

Program Structure

Required Rotations

Rotations are four weeks in duration unless specified otherwise. Required rotations are typically taken in the order presented below.

  • Information Science and Foundations of Informatics
  • Pharmacy Analytics I - Data Visualization
  • EHR Medication Use Informatics/Technology - Part I
  • EHR Medication Use Informatics/Technology - Part II
  • Medication Use Technology: Operations and Automation Focused
  • Pharmacy Analytics II - Data Acquisition, Cleansing, and Retrieval
  • EHR Clinical Decision Support
  • Informatics Health-System Administration and Leadership

Elective Rotations 

All elective rotation offerings are one month in duration.

  • Vendor Experience (McCreadie Group)
  • Epic - Beacon Oncology Module
  • Pharmacy Analytics III - Predictive Modeling
  • EHR Clinical Decision Support II
  • EHR Medication Use Informatics/Technology  II

Longitudinal Experiences

  • Proficiency in Epic Inpatient Willow (start in July and required completion by end of September)
  • Pharmacy Analytics: SQL and Data Visualization training
  • Planning and implementation of major pharmacy informatics/IT project* (start in July)
  • Medication Safety - Informatics/Technology
  • Other: Informatics-related project/optimization work based on existing or planned projects 

*Subject to availability of projects prior to start of residency 

Staffing Responsibility

  • Every third weekend in a general staff pharmacist role

Research and Publications Opportunity

  • Through the research and writing requirements of the program, the resident has the potential to produce at least two manuscripts suitable for peer-reviewed publication by the end of the residency. The resident will also present his/her research protocol and results to pharmacy staff and faculty and at the Great Lakes Regional Residency Conference in April.   Additionally, the resident will also present an ACPE Continuing Education seminar based on his/her writing project in the Winter to pharmacy staff and faculty.

Teaching Opportunity

  • Residents will receive a faculty appointment as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. Experience in rotation-related precepting and in the teaching of PharmD students and PGY1 residents is available. In addition, the Resident will gain experience in didactic teaching of second-year PharmD students at the College of Pharmacy.

Program Assessment Strategy

  • The program is structured in accordance with the ASHP Accreditation Standards and ASHP Educational Outcomes, Goals, and Objectives for PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency and utilizes the Residency Learning System model. This program has a four-part assessment strategy of learning experiences: resident evaluation of learning experience, resident evaluation of preceptor, resident self-evaluation, and preceptor evaluation of the resident’s performance during the learning experience.
