The Better Sleep for Bipolar Disorder study (HUM00235778) is a research study testing the effects of low dose melatonin use in a small number of people with bipolar disorder to learn the effects on mood and the body clock (also called the circadian clock).
Who Can Participate?
- Adults ages 18-60 years old with bipolar disorder type I or II
- Currently enrolled in the Prechter Longitudinal Study of Bipolar Disorder (HUM00000606)
- Psychotropic medications at stable dose for past month
- Have trouble falling asleep and waking up on time on workdays or at desired/socially required times
- Have no trouble sleeping on weekends/free days
- Feel, down, sad, or blue
- Females of childbearing potential must not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and must agree to use contraception throughout the study
What is involved with participating in this study?
- Includes a low dose melatonin pill and 4 behavioral sleep sessions with a clinician and half will be randomized to receive a control, a placebo pill and 4 behavioral sleep placebo sessions with a clinician
- Visit our office 3-4 times at the Rachel Upjohn Building (free and easy parking)
- Three days of saliva collection in your home starting 6.5 hours before your bedtime
- Downloading a mobile application on your phone to complete daily surveys
- Answer questions about your sleep, mood, and functioning
- Four weekly 15-30 minute virtual meetings with study staff
- Wear a Fitbit on your wrist throughout the study
You may be paid up to $350 for completing all aspects of the study.
