Job Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is offering a full-time, tenure track faculty position within the Heinz Prechter Bipolar Research Program, an endowed, internationally-acclaimed research enterprise with projects spanning molecular, clinical, and population health approaches. For the appropriately qualified candidate, this position may be partially supported by an endowed professorship, the Richard Tam Professorship of Translational Bipolar Research, pending approval by the Regents of U-M.
Research Activity:
We are seeking a mid-career physician-scientist with background and training in the experimental sciences and enthusiasm to advance in an academic career that emphasizes translational research in bipolar disorder. This position offers and expects the successful candidate to interface between clinical research and the biological and computational sciences. The successful candidate will have established knowledge in the clinical assessment and management of bipolar disorder. She/he will become a member of a vibrant interdisciplinary research group currently conducting studies relevant to biological, psychological, and other mechanisms behind bipolar disorder. The Prechter Bipolar Research program has collaborative studies with multiple departments in the U-M Medical School and across the Schools of the University of Michigan.
The program’s core research centers on a 13-year longitudinal study of bipolar disorder. The successful candidate will have a passion towards identifying etiology factors that drive the bipolar phenotype and/or use the longitudinal patterns from multidisciplinary research to model outcomes of disease. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership role as the Associate Director of the Prechter Bipolar Research Program and develop independent projects within the Prechter Program that will lead to extramural funding. There will be strong support to facilitate grant applications according to the level and needs of the candidate.
This position will fall under the supervision of the Director of the Prechter Bipolar Research Program.
Clinical Activity:
Clinical activity will be primarily outpatient based and centered around the weekly bipolar clinic at the U-M Department of Psychiatry.
Educational Activities:
Dedicated clinical and basic science educators in the Department of Psychiatry provide a full range of teaching to a broad array of health professionals. Interactive educational opportunities are targeted to medical students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral trainees, and a wide range of students and trainees throughout the University of Michigan. The applicant will be offered opportunities to share their expertise in core curriculum development/delivery, medical student teaching, Journal Clubs, Evidence-Based Medicine Seminars, and Grand Rounds.
Administration:
The successful candidate will be expected to attend Faculty Meetings within the Department of Psychiatry. This will include Academic Staff, All-Staff, Physicians Meetings, and other administrative meetings deemed necessary by their reporting supervisor. Relevant training on all elements of medical records and research administrative matters (e.g. IRB) will be provided.
Required Qualifications:
- MD or MD/PhD or equivalent
- Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan
- Completion of a residency in Psychiatry
- Board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry
- Superior clinical competencies and master teacher
- Demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration
- Record of successful acquisition of external funding and a record of publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals
