Position Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time clinical-track faculty member, trained in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, to work within Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital Services. Primary clinical responsibilities will be after hours (evenings and weekends) providing consultation to the pediatric medical units and emergency room. There may be opportunity to also rotate on to the day consultation-liaison service, after hours Psychiatric Emergency Service as well as provide coverage on the inpatient psychiatry service for candidates that are interested in being involved in these services.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Psychiatric Emergency

The Psychiatry Emergency Service sees approximately 7,000 visits a year. Crisis evaluation, treatment initiation, stabilization, and referral are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Patients of all ages and with all diagnoses are seen. The Psychiatry Emergency Service has a general unit and a secure core area for patients with behavioral dysregulation. Care is provided in an interprofessional fashion with close engagement with social work, nursing, security and trainees. There is a close collaborative relationship between Psychiatric Emergency Services and the consultation and inpatient services. 

Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service

The Consultation-Liaison Service serves the 232 bed C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. The service receives approximately 60 initial consult requests and sees approximately 150-180 follow-up consultations per month. The Consultation-Liaison Service has dedicated social work, behavioral nursing, and nurse practitioner support, as well as regular involvement of a Child Psychiatry fellow and several trainees in Pediatrics and Psychiatry. The Consultation-Liaison Service has a strong collaborative relationship with the Pediatrics Service and the Children’s Hospital. For hospitalized youth and young adults, the service provides 24-hour access to psychiatric consultations in partnership with the Psychiatric Emergency Service. The service also prides itself on rich opportunities for teaching, quality improvement and liaison activity with general and subspecialty pediatric services and multiple disciples throughout the hospital.

Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry Unit

Embedded within C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is a 16-bed Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital, the Nyman Unit for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellness. This unit has a 13-bed general milieu and a 3-bed subunit for youth with behavioral dysregulation or significant needs related to activities of daily living. The unit is unique in that it can see youth with medical comorbidities, can provide electroconvulsive therapy and can see youth with significant agitation or aggression in a safe and secure environment. The unit has a strong multidisciplinary approach to care with involvement of Psychology and a behavioral specialist, Social work, Activity therapy, Nursing, Learning Specialists. The unit has two faculty teams, a Nurse Practitioner, and two Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellows, as well as serving as a rotation site for Child Psychiatry fellows from surrounding programs and senior medical students

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, administrative, and teaching aspects of the Psychiatric Emergency Service and Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service. Opportunities in teaching and academic collaboration may also exist with the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry Unit or with Pediatrics.

Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position. Because of the increasing medical complexity of patients throughout the hospital, the candidate must have a familiarity and comfort with medical issues as necessary to provide appropriate psychiatric consultation and psychiatric emergency care.

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY

Academic interests are encouraged. Accomplishments such as book chapters, development of educational programs, involvement in clinical innovations or novel programming and inquiry about the clinical aspects of the provision of care are examples of academic interests that align with this position. Programmatic research is encouraged but not expected.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy is required
  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary
  • Board certification or eligibility in Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is required
  • Applicants must demonstrate promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration
  • Superior clinical competencies and master teaching skills are necessary
  • For applicants currently employed by the University of Michigan, the active member must be in good standing within the University of Michigan Medical staff
  • Under Michigan law, a criminal history check, including fingerprinting, is required as a condition of employment or transfer for this position
  • Completion of a residency in Pediatrics or similar recognition is desirable but not required
  • Experience working in pediatric medical or ER settings is preferred
