Position Overview

The University of Michigan Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is seeking a talented full-time clinical track child psychology faculty member to participate in clinical, research, administrative, and teaching responsibilities on the Nyman Family Unit for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellness. Built in 2016, the Nyman Inpatient Psychiatry Unit is a nationally regarded, state-of-the-art, 16 bed psychiatry unit with 13 general beds and 3 subunit beds for youth with significant behavioral or developmental needs. The faculty member will be an active participant in our clinical programming on the Nyman Inpatient Psychiatry Unit with significant clinical experience in evidence-based therapies (behavioral interventions, CBT, IPT, DBT) for a broad range of child and adolescent psychopathology. In particular, the applicant should have clinical experience in psychotherapeutic and behavioral interventions for youth with autism spectrum disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, intellectual disability, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, attachment disorders, psychotic disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, eating disorders, suicidal ideation and behavior, aggression, and psychological trauma. Comfort with youth with concurrent medical needs and/or development needs is an important aspect of the role of the faculty member in both conceptualizing and care for youth served on the Nyman Unit.

The applicant should have experience providing evaluation and intervention for youth, parents/caregivers, and families/dyads. They will also inform family treatments and assist families in developing behavioral management programs appropriate to the home setting to reduce re-hospitalization. Having experience in administering neurodevelopmental and psychometric assessments is an important aspect of this role. The Nyman Unit also has a full-time BCBA position to serve our subunit population, many of whom have autism or developmental disability. The faculty member will partner with the Clinical Nursing Director in supervising the BCBA on the unit.

The candidate will join a dynamic group of faculty, partnering with a leadership team that values clinical, academic, and educational excellence and innovation. Additionally, the faculty member will provide teaching to physician, psychology, nurse practitioner, and social work trainees at the University of Michigan. Opportunities for clinical research and quality improvement are available for interested faculty. The faculty member would be working closely with an interprofessional team of child psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, patient care workers, learning specialists, activity therapists on a highly collaborative, interprofessional team.

This position will report to the Medical Director of the Nyman Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, as well as the Service Chief for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. and work closely with a dynamic team of faculty and staff across the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Section.

Educational Activities

The faculty member will be involved in the training and education for physician, psychology, nurse practitioner and social work trainees rotating on the Nyman Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. This may also involve the direct supervision and mentorship of psychology trainees and practicum students, as well as physician trainees. There are also ample opportunities for formal didactics, case conferences, debriefs, and other opportunities to teach trainees in this role. There will be opportunities to teach in core curriculum, mentorships in psychotherapy, medical student teaching, and case conferences. The successful candidate will be involved in trainee recruitment and interviewing.

Administration

The successful candidate will be expected to attend faculty meetings within the Department of Psychiatry. This will include regular meetings of the Nyman Unit Steering Committee, Nyman Unit Programming Committees, Hospital Services Leadership, Academic Staff, All-Staff, Physicians Meetings, and Child Psychology Faculty Meetings. Other administrative meetings deemed necessary by the Nyman Unit Medical Director or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service Chief may also be included as part of administrative responsibilities, including meetings interfacing with units, services, and leadership outside the Nyman Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. In addition to timely attention to pertinent administrative work (e.g., electronic medical record and in-basket monitoring, phone calls, letters, records, e-mails, etc.), the new faculty member will participate in all relevant quality improvement initiatives and activities. The faculty member will also help to structure and guide the therapeutic and research mission on the inpatient unit with emphasis on efficient and effective delivery of psychosocial interventions and fostering a therapeutic milieu.

Required Qualifications

The candidate should have a doctoral degree from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited graduate program, have completed an APA-accredited internship and postdoctoral experience, have obtained or be eligible for licensure in Michigan, and will either have or be eligible to apply for specialty board certification from the American Board of Professional Psychology. Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching, and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary and be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical Staff. Comfort with providing psychological care to patients with significant physical health or developmental needs is necessary. It is important that the applicant have a demonstrated history of working well in interprofessional environments, collaborative teams and does well with problem solving and conflict management.

Preferred Qualifications

It is preferred that applicants have had at least one year of experience working in a child psychiatric inpatient setting. Experience in quality improvement and/or research is desirable. Experience providing psychological assessment, particularly youth with autism or other neurodevelopmental disability, as well as parental, dyadic and familial therapy is highly preferred. The applicant should also have comfort caring for youth with both psychiatric concerns and concurrent medical or developmental needs.
