Guidance for parents from U-M experts

The Department of Psychiatry is pleased to present this Mind Matters educational webinar that will address what loved ones can do when a child in their life expresses suicidal thoughts and/or engages in self-harming behaviors.

  • According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), teenagers and young adults are most likely to self-harm, with 17.2% of teenagers and 13.4% of young adults engaging in self-harm.
  • NAMI reports that 11% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 have serious thoughts about suicide, and 1-2% have attempted suicide in the past year.
  • NAMI reports that 1 in 6 youth between the ages of 6 and 17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
  • NAMI reports that 50% of all mental health conditions begin before the age of 14, and 75% begin before the age of 24.
  • NAMI reports that adverse social determinants of health, such as abuse, neglect, and parent-child conflict, are significantly associated with self-harm in youth.
  • NAMI reports that suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 14.
