Position Overview

The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a full-time tenure (instructional) track or clinical track faculty member.  The Director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry oversees all program missions, including clinical care delivery, education, and research.  They work to optimize cost-efficient clinical delivery in the program, maximize patient access and facilitate research and clinical synergies where possible.  They will also serve as an advocate for faculty, staff and trainee interests, well-being and success.  Additionally, the Director will advise the Chair on matters relating to the faculty with primary assignment within the Child & Adolescent program, including their annual performance reviews, career development and conflict resolution.

The Director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry serves an important and impactful role in the Department, the clinic, with trainees and the faculty and staff in their program.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve as a leader and general resource to faculty members as well as a liaison to the Department and Medical School
  • Provide administrative direction of laboratory and/or clinical research; facilitate connections for faculty mentoring relationships, as well as for graduate students, residents and others in research projects; speak to the scholarly/research productivity of each faculty member
  • Partner with the Chair, Associate Chairs and other clinical and administrative leaders to steward resources and improve the financial and performance metrics of the program and Department
  • Interface with Associate Chairs and other Program Directors regarding faculty matters
  • General Program Faculty Oversight
    • Formulate and communicate to the Department Chair recommendations for hiring, evaluation, retention, promotion, tenure, merit pay, or discipline of Program faculty
    • Participate in the recruitment of faculty, students and trainees
    • Work with Department Administration and ensure new faculty members are onboarded and receive orientation as they begin working as a new faculty member at Michigan Medicine
    • Assist in, as requested and when appropriate, faculty clinical credentialing, re-appointments and privileges, and re-certification processes
    • Perform or delegate annual, formal merit / performance evaluations:
      • Meet with each faculty member in the program and provide written feedback to each faculty member as part of the evaluation process
    • Assist in conflict resolution relating to faculty members; provide representation when necessary
  • Provide, as an adjunct to other primary mentorship relationships, ongoing career mentorship for their faculty supporting and encouraging their academic productivity
  • Understand and hold faculty accountable for program faculty’s clinical responsibilities, as applicable
    • Help to determine the faculty members’ clinical target based on Department productivity standards and cFTE
    • Ensure each faculty member in the program understands his/her clinical expectations

    • Actively participate in all related fellowship and training programs

Required Qualifications*

  • MD/DO or equivalent Medical Degree from an accredited medical school
  • Current board certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Eligible for faculty appointment at University of Michigan as an associate or full professor
  • Eligible for appointment to the medical staff at Michigan Medicine
  • Strong record in research, education and service
  • Research experience includes substantial and sustained research funding
  • Demonstrable experience in collaborative relationships with strong healthcare organizations, and especially in engaging those organizations in research
  • Demonstrable experience in collaborative problem-solving with academic colleagues in clinical, educational and research spheres
