Chris Terhaard received his MD degree from the Radboud Caltholic University of Nijmegen in 1981 and completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1988. He completed his PhD at the University of Utrecht in 1991. He started as a radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology in Utrecht from 1995, with special focus on clinical research and treatment of patients with a head and neck tumor. Since 2014 he is appointed in the University of Utrecht as a full professor on image guided radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.  Since 2001 he is chairman of the Head and Neck Group of the UMC Utrecht, he serves as member of several boards on head and neck oncology. His fields of interest are Head and Neck cancer radiotherapy, GI-radiotherapy, radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer, prognostic factors and treatment for salivary gland cancers, research on xerostomia (parotid and submandibular function), role of imaging in head and neck cancer, with special focus on use FDG-PET and MRI, validation of imaging with operation specimens. He is secretary of the international head and neck MRI-linac (1.5 Tesla – linac)  consortium. This consortium is preparing, in conjunction with Elekta,  the  introduction of MRI-guided radiotherapy. He holds several Dutch Cancer Society Research grants.  He has 108  international peer reviewed publications and is coauthor of several books. His was/ is a(co)-promotor of 19 PhD students. He is frequently invited as opponent in PhD defenses, and as a speaker on international meetings.
