Biography

Sharon R. Helmer, MD grew up in the small farming community of Hanover, Michigan. After receiving her B.S. degree from the University of Michigan, she graduated from Wayne State University Medical School and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Oakwood Hospital. She became board certified in 1987 and was recruited to stay on with a large, private radiology group. During this time, she also served as Director of the Radiology Residency Program at Oakwood Hospital and Director of the Mammography Division.

In 2007, Karmanos Cancer Center recruited Dr. Helmer to develop their breast imaging program and fulfill the role of Clinical Director of Breast Imaging and later appointed as Clinical Service Chief of Imaging.

In 2015, Dr. Helmer was appointed section chief for ultrasound at John D. Dingall VA Medical Center, as well as was asked to develop a strategic plan for breast imaging. Overlapping with this role, Dr. Helmer also developed and designed a breast imaging division for Oakland Macomb Obstetrics and Gynecology P.C. where she went on to direct this center full time.

In 2023, Dr. Helmer was recruited to the University of Michigan Radiology Department, Division of Breast Imaging where she continues to utilize her experience and leadership skills to provide compassionate breast screening and diagnostic services.
