Avraham Eisbruch, MD, Lectureship in Radiation Oncology

Celebrating a remarkable career with plans for an Endowed Lectureship

TO CELEBRATE THE REMARKABLE CAREER AND CONTRIBUTIONS of Avraham Eisbruch, MD, as he retires, we are pleased to announce a campaign to establish the Avraham Eisbruch, MD, Lectureship in Radiation Oncology. Please join us in honoring Dr. Eisbruch’s distinguished 25 year-career at the University of Michigan in the service of patients, trainees and colleagues.

A tribute to Dr. Eisbruch’s dedication to advancing knowledge, the lectureship will annually bring a respected and inspirational thinker to U-M to share new ideas and engage with faculty and trainees. It will enhance our involvement in cutting-edge work, which is fitting recognition for a colleague who has been instrumental in making our department a national leader in radiation oncology.

Dr. Eisbruch joined the faculty at U-M in 1992, and during his tenure served as residency program director, clinical division director, and associate chair for clinical research. He was promoted to full professor in 2005 and named as Newman Family Professor of Radiation Oncology in 2009.

Dr. Eisbruch is truly an educator at heart, serving as a faculty advisor or mentor to dozens of today’s emerging leaders in radiation oncology. Numerous teaching awards attest to his skill and dedication: He is truly a teacher among teachers.

Known broadly as one of the top radiation oncologists in the world, Dr. Eisbruch has made seminal contributions to the field by developing IMRT techniques for parotid sparing which is now the standard of care for cancers of the head and neck. Continuing this pioneering work, Dr. Eisbruch also developed methods to minimize dose to the constrictor/swallowing muscles, furher improving quality of life while maintaining extraordinarily high tumor control rates. These results were featured in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

In 2008, Dr. Eisbruch was recognized by the American Head and Neck Society for “outstanding leadership and contributions in radiation oncology which im- proved treatment results and quality of life of patients with head & neck cancer.”

His collaborators at U-M and across the country often cite his expertise, intellect, and wit. Dr. Eisbruch has presented more than 100 invited talks and lectures nationally and internationally, and has published over 200 papers.

Dr. Eisbruch earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Tel Aviv University, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. He completed a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and a residency in radiation oncology at Washington University in St. Louis.

You may recognize the sentiment: “The results of our study exceeded all expectations, exactly as we had anticipated”, which was a fixture on the whiteboard in his office. We are optimistic that together, we can recognize the impact he has had on all of us in just that fashion. Thank you for your partnership.
