NIH Awards $1.4 Million for Sleep and Dementia Research

Principal investigators Tiffany Braley MD, MS and Galit Levi Dunietz PhD, MPH were recently awarded $1.4M in new R01 funding by the National Institute on Aging to study unexplored pathways between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), OSA treatment, and dementia risk in older women and men.  To study these pathways, Braley and Dunietz will utilize population-level cognitive, sleep, health, and biomarker data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) linked to Medicare claims datasets. This epidemiologic study will further explore key potential biological mediators and effect modifiers that underlie these relationships. The study team also includes co-investigators Hank Paulson MD, PhD, Ronald Chervin MD, MS, and Kerby Shedden PhD.
