We train the future leaders of academic surgery at Michigan Medicine. Research training is essential to the skill set needed by modern surgeons, and our training program reflects this. We provide residents the opportunity a diverse selection of opportunities to develop their research skills during their residency. In addition, we offer research training opportunities for a wide range of audiences, from undergraduates to faculty members.
To further emphasize our focus on research training, the Department of Surgery gives residents dedicated time during their training to focus on developing their skills as surgeon scientists. Residents in the Department of Surgery will be allotted time during the fourth and fifth years of their training program to focus exclusively on academic interests. During this time, residents will have the time to pursue research without clinical responsibilities.
