Adnan Hyder, MD, PhD, MPH

Biography

Adnan Hyder, MD, PhD, MPH is Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins. He is the Director of the Health Systems program, Director of the International Injury Research Unit (a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Injuries, Violence and Accident Prevention), and Associate Director of Global Programs at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. He serves as Co-Director of the NIH-Fogarty International Research Ethics Training Program at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has published and worked for 20 years on issues related to health systems development, equity, and ethics in low- and middle-income countries of Africa and Asia. Dr. Hyder has studied biomedical ethics, conducted surveys on research ethics, participated in the training of African and Asian health professionals in ethics, and explored health systems ethics including specific issues such as standard of treatment and ancillary care. Fundamental to his efforts is a desire to build research capacity around ethics in developing countries, and to lead a team of experts to conduct breakthrough research to understand the current state of research ethics and health systems development around the world. Dr. Hyder obtained his MPH and PhD degrees from Johns Hopkins University, and his MD from the Aga Khan University in Pakistan.
