Mentorship Academy

Training to Be a Mentor & Mentee

We believe that everyone is a mentor. Mentorship is essential to professional development and long-term career success, leading to stronger career trajectories and higher levels of productivity for those who have an effective mentorship experience.

The mentorship academy brings together experts on mentorship to highlight strategies and skills for exemplary mentorship. The ultimate goal of the mentorship academy is to provide mentorship insights and tools that will support a new generation of mentors in leading academic medicine and scholarship into the future.

Mentorship Madness

Mentorship Madness is a micro-mentoring series that is part of the mentorship academy's virtual outreach efforts. This program delivers concise insights into effective mentorship from experienced mentors from across the university via the Twitter account, @MichMedMentors. We encourage all to participate in sharing mentorship advice, resources and comments using #MentorToTheMax.

As part of the Mentorship Madness micro-mentoring sessions, Dr. Vineet ChopraDr. Justin DimickDr. Michelle Moniz created a series of videos giving quick insights into various aspects of mentorship, ranging from how to approach a mentor to how to foster a mentorship infrastructure at an institution.

Symposium

As leaders in mentorship, we have designed a full-day educational experience, the Mentorship Academy Symposium, for those interested in learning about how to mentor and be mentored.

The symposium is designed for mentor-mentee dyads, faculty development leaders interested in mentorship and increasing the success of mentees, individual mentors looking to improve their mentorship capabilities, and trainees or junior faculty members looking to get the most out of their mentoring relationships. The event includes a combination of lectures, panel discussions, question and answer sessions, small group discussions and role play.

Past conferences provided a one-day workshop to help attendees become a better mentor, a more effective mentee, and enhance their organization’s mentoring culture.

Featured topics included:

  • What Mentors Wish Their Mentees Knew
  • Helping Mentees Craft Their Trajectories: Finding the Golden Nugget
  • Mentee Missteps
  • Gender Bias in the Workplace
  • Navigating Blindspots: Challenges that Cross Gender Lines
