Why Train at Michigan

Learn about the unique opportunities at Michigan Medicine.

Excellence in Academic Surgery

At the University of Michigan Department of Surgery, we’re known nationally for excellence in guiding the next generation of surgeons. But excellence is just the start.

Our commitment to teaching starts with protected time for our faculty to coach trainees. You’ll join a team of more than 150 full-time physicians and scientists who will challenge and support you while you advance to independence in the OR and beyond.

Stronger Together

You’ve set the pace in your previous education, and at the University of Michigan Department of Surgery, you’ll join a cohort of students, residents and fellows from leading institutions.

Our programs frequently recruit trainees from top 20 research medical schools, and trainees have their pick of options when they leave Michigan.

With more than 140 residents and fellows across 10 specialties and sub-specialties, the learning experience at Michigan provides rich opportunities to learn with and from a diverse cohort. We are committed to an inclusive environment that recognizes strengths in different backgrounds, skills and abilities.

Great Cases Come to You

Biomedical Science Research Building

Your training ground is Michigan Medicine, U-M's academic medical center, which includes in-patient hospitals for adults and children, and specialty centers for cardiovascular care, cancer treatment, eye care, and women’s health.

The size and scope of clinical facilities — nearly 1,000 beds and more than 16,000 annual operative cases — and U-M’s status as a state referral center mean that you’ll manage more clinical cases and see more diverse and rare cases than at other institutions. And with the hospital campus in the center of our compact and livable city, you’ll spend more time in the OR and less time stuck in traffic.

Small City, Big Intellect

While we’re proud of the scale and the stature of our programs, numbers can’t capture the warmth and collegiality of our culture and our institution. The University of Michigan is a place where physicians bump into engineers at a coffee shop and form decades-long research partnerships. It is a place where continuous learning is a given. Lectures by visiting international experts are just one of the ways our students discover a richer learning experience. In short, the world comes to you at the University of Michigan. We combine opportunities to learn from world-class leaders with a setting that thrives on collaboration.
