A Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the summer edition of In The Loupes.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the summer edition of In The Loupes. I hope that your summer has been warm, relaxing, and filled with equal measures of work and free time.

This edition of In The Loupes highlights individuals who have made contributions to the department in the past, introduces Hasan Alam, our new Section Head of General Surgery, and talks about work currently being done in the department.

It is with sadness that we note the passing of Herbert Sloan, M.D. Dr. Sloan was a pioneer in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. He set the foundation for thoracic surgery at the University of Michigan and recruited many of our current leaders, including Dr. Mark Orringer.

The wonderful work being done by the Jobst laboratories is described in a separate article. This highlights important contributions related to the problem of thrombosis. One of the cardinal features of Jobst laboratories is the commitment to building the next generation of surgeon scientists. Dr. Sean English, the 2013 winner of the Lindenauer Vascular Research and Education Award, exemplifies that commitment.

Finally, this edition of In The Loupes introduces Dr. Hasan Alam, the new Section Head of General Surgery. Dr. Alam joins us from the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Alam is an internationally recognized expert in acute care surgery. His research efforts are absolutely cutting edge. He will continue the proud heritage of excellence in clinical care, dedication to education, and research success that has characterized the department for so long.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. I’ll see you in the fall.
