Dear Friends,

I am happy to take a moment to share with you the latest edition of In The Loupes. It was a busy fall for all of us here in the University of Michigan Department of Surgery; I hope these articles will provide you with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of some of the research taking place here at Michigan — and the wonderful and determined people who make it all happen.

An article about Paul Cederna, M.D., describes his research into regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) — a fascinating new technique poised to revolutionize functional recovery for patients who have undergone amputation.

You’ll find a profile of Diane Simeone, M.D., who has devoted her entire career to finding a cure for pancreatic cancer, a deadly and devastating disease. Dr. Simeone’s steadfast devotion to her patients — and to the unique, collaborative culture of this institution — have helped place Michigan at the forefront of pancreatic cancer research worldwide.

The Health System’s collaborative richness also is behind the story of pediatric otolaryngologist Glenn Green, M.D., and biomedical engineer Scott Hollister, Ph.D., whose development of a 3D-printed airway splint saved the life of an Ohio toddler last year. Their momentous achievement has led to a Breakthrough Innovator Award from Popular Mechanics magazine.
