Greetings!

In this, the summer issue of the Department of Surgery e-newsletter, we’ll be focusing our attention on resident research.

The University of Michigan Department of Surgery attracts some of the world’s best and brightest young surgeons. Some have earned their medical degrees here and witnessed first-hand the opportunities for state-of-the-art training in a wide variety of areas. Others come to us from some of the most prestigious medical schools in the country, drawn here by the Department’s stellar reputation.

In any given year, the Department of Surgery is training over 140 residents and fellows in general surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, breast surgery, and transplantation.

As you scroll down, in addition to profiles, notes and announcements, you’ll see two features about the ways surgery resident research currently flourishes and how it’s poised for powerful change. Learn about Robert Gilman, M.D., the newly recruited director of the residency program for our cosmetic plastic surgery program. And, most important, be sure to read the announcement of a vitally important new campaign: the Department of Surgery and its generous donors and stakeholders are working together to create a $32 million endowment to support surgery resident research.

As ever, we welcome your feedback!

All the best,

Michael W. Mulholland, M.D., Ph.D.
