Greetings!

I am happy to share with you the spring issue of our newsletter. I hope you will take a moment to read about some current and future initiatives to advance research and patient care at the University of Michigan Health System, as well as the dedicated faculty and care providers who are driving these efforts.

We are excited to feature an article about the Michigan Surgical Home Optimization Program, or MSHOP, a program designed to empower patients to prepare for good outcomes in the operating room. MSHOP provides doctors and patients with practical tools and new technology to make better decisions about procedures, reduce the length of hospital stays following surgery and lower the overall cost of care. This program is a prime example of how the U-M is using the latest available technology and research to improve care for our individual patients, each and every day.

For a glimpse into the future of patient care at Michigan, read the profile of Jacqueline Jeruss, M.D., Ph.D., a surgical oncologist who joined our faculty this fall. Dr. Jeruss is collaborating with U-M’s Department of Biomedical Engineering to develop novel therapies for breast cancer and bring them into the clinic through U-M’s Translational Oncology Program. Her story represents Michigan’s commitment to bring on the best and brightest faculty, whose work holds promise to change the course of medicine.

Also providing insight on the future of medicine at the UMHS, is an article about the Massey Family Foundation’s latest gift to the Department of Surgery. This grateful patient’s investment will fund an endowed professorship devoted to improving trauma and surgical critical care.

I hope you enjoy reading these articles and wish you a wonderful spring.
