Ryan is a general surgery resident at Michigan Medicine, where he also obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees. His research interests are broadly related to improving the quality and safety of surgical care. Specifically, he has been involved in local and statewide quality improvement initiatives involving preoperative patient optimization, evidence-based postoperative opioid prescribing, and perioperative health behavior change. He also conducts health services research examining national trends in patient outcomes following bariatric surgery and hernia repair. Outside of research, he serves as Creative Director for Annals of Surgery. He is currently spending his dedicated academic development time as a fellow at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy.
