About Us

Dr. Ward

"As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we look back on a rich heritage of oral and maxillofacial surgery and hospital dentistry at Michigan. We carry this heritage into the future as we strive to be leaders in patient care, research, and education.”

— Brent Ward, D.D.S., M.D., Section Chief, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery / Hospital Dentistry

Legacy of Impact

As one of the oldest programs of our kind in the country, we make a big impact across the tripartite mission of academic surgery, striving to offer the best care and the best education, and to produce the most impactful scientific advances.

Our clinics receive more than 8,000 outpatient visits a year, and we perform more than 1,200 operative procedures — a track record of steady growth that allows us to reach more patients and to provide a rich context of diverse cases for trainees and researchers.

Improving Care at Home & Abroad

At Michigan Medicine and beyond, we’re passionate about improving care for underserved populations, and each year we travel on medical mission trips abroad to bring advanced services to those in need.

Our global outreach includes collaborations with colleagues in China, India, Mexico, and South America to offer services in microvascular surgery, head and neck reconstructive surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, and TMJ surgery. By working closely with our counterparts in other countries, we’re able to extend the skills of surgeons on the ground, improving care for the long run.

“Humanitarian efforts are deeply ingrained in the University of Michigan culture.”

— Sharon Aronovich, DMD, FRCD(C)

These outreach trips also provide invaluable experience and inspiration to residents and dental students.
